Palmers Scaffolding has successfully secured the contract to provide access solutions for the refurbishment of the iconic Liverpool Lime Street trainshed roof, which spans platforms 1-10 and the station concourse. The project involves replacing all roof panels above the platforms and a combination of refurbishing and replacing panels across the remaining roof structure.
The new roof panels are designed to allow more natural light into the station, enhancing the passenger experience with a brighter and more welcoming environment. In addition to the roof improvements, the project includes an upgraded rainwater drainage system to address leaks that occasionally affect platforms during heavy rainfall.
An innovative elevated sliding works platform, operated from Exchange Square, will be employed for the project. This advanced system minimizes disruption by enabling refurbishment and replacement work to take place above the station’s operations, ensuring the station remains fully functional throughout the construction process.
Preliminary work, such as relocating the Greater Anglia ticket office and creating new retail spaces, began in late July 2024. Existing retail units along the gateline started being removed in August 2024, with plans for new gatelines to be introduced. Palmers’ scaffolding work in support of the roof renewal commenced in late 2024 under the leadership of Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.
This ambitious project demonstrates Palmers’ ability to deliver innovative and efficient access solutions for complex infrastructure upgrades.
