Carlisle NetworkRail Station

Palmers were appointed by GallifordTry to provide access scaffolding and protection decks at Carlisle Railway Station. The station, which opened in 1851is a major station on the West Coast Main Line, 102 miles south of Glasgow Central, and 299 miles north of London Euston. It’s a Grade II listed building and forms part of the Carlisle conservation zone. There are more than 1 million passenger movements through the station each year.

The scaffold’s purpose

The scaffold was required to provide access and protection decks to enable the roof to be refurbished allowing glass removal and reconstruction together with steel repairs where necessary.

Most of the works carried out were to the high-level roof which covers the main station concourse and platform. The roof is predominantly a glazed structure which has 4,004 No. glazing panels.

The main roof structure spans approximately 47m East-West across the concourse, two platforms and 3 intervening rail tracks and 160m north to south. The glazing to the high-level roof consists of 4004 No upper and lower glazing panels.  The upper glazing panels are 2340mm x 600mm and the lower are 2440mm x 600mm.  There were defective glazing panels (cracked and broken) across the entire station roof.

Contract value

The contract value for Scaffolding and Protection Decks was circa £3m

Principal contractor

The Principal Contractor was GallifordTry with its ultimate client being Network Rail

GallifordTry’s key objective was to refurbish the train-shed roof at Carlisle Station to maintain the station and extend the property’s life by at least 30 years

Scaffold type & design: Detail

The Scaffolding supplied by Palmers was based on modular access and protection deck scaffold. The key component within the scaffold structure was Palmers 1350 Bridge Panel System which incorporated bracing and end panels the components could be used in either beam structures to span the railway or support columns to provides bases for the protection decks

The use of the Palmers bridging panel system was a key factor in allowing Palmers to design a scaffolding structure which could span the railway lines to allow the works to carry on without interfering with the running of the railway and protect the commuting passengers and railway staff who operate within the station 365 days a year

The plan dimensions of the scaffold were circa 47M Span x 160m long 7520m2 on plan

The scaffold was erected to provide access to over 13 number roof bays with the scaffold spanning the platforms to create a working level 9m above the ground level
