Gatwick North Terminal IDL Project

Client: Balfour Beatty

Scope

The Bobcat project was a project on the North Terminal IDL to provide additional shops and restaurants on a newly formed Mezzanine floor (level 30) Palmers were contracted to build a free standing lifting gantry adjacent to the pier 4 connector 18m long 13m wide 17.5m high x to be able to lift up 9m long steel beams weighing 3 tons.

Value of Contract

£680k

Role Undertaken by Palmers

Provide Scaffolding to allow the provision of additional shops and restaurants on a newly formed Mezzanine floor (level 30) Scaffold Dimensions 18m long 13m wide 17.5m high

Palmers also supplied scaffolding for the M&E fit out in plantroom

Critical Success Factors

Through early engagement Palmers developed solutions with Balfour Beatty and GAL to enable access for decking the floor. Once the steels were bolted up and in situ, a laydown scaffold was erected to the underside of steels to enable the decking of floor to be complete

All the works carried out in the live IDL terminal was on a nighttime basis so to minimise any disruption to the retail shops operations, passengers and other airport workers.

Innovation

The access structure incorporated lifting solutions work which is something Palmers regularly supply as 9m long steel beams were lifted using 3 trolley electric winches landed on scaffold and then trolleyed into the IDL

Inside the IDL support 2 rows of support scaffolds were built and steel spine beams sat on these towers so that beams could span across IDL 27m from the old-world duty free to Joe Malone’s.

Relevant Experience to Gatwick

The contract was carried out within an airside environment at Gatwick and with all works being conducted at night under a strict permit system, on a live airport with tight security restrictions. Before each shift the Night time Activity Briefing (NAB’s) was critical for the works to be carried out as most works were at height but still requiring  parts of the terminal IDL to be keep open for 3rd party ’s access such as retail access to shops to restock,  passengers flow and other airport workers.

Process

Scaffold Requests – weekly planning meetings which was attended by the project management team

Daily / Nightly Activity briefings before all activities commence

Any changes required to scope were addressed with an EWN which were issued by either party

Before each shift the Nighttime activity briefing (NAB’s) was critical for the works to be carried out as  most works were at height but still requiring parts of the terminal IDL to be keep open

Internal monthly branch meetings were held to review, and, where necessary, address progress, stock control, labour control, logistics, application of permits, review of designs and commercial issues
